Newly Qualified Teacher

Whether you have completed your initial teacher training (ITT) through a PGCE, SCITT or Schools Direct, being a Newly Qualified Teacher can be a little daunting. So many schools, so many jobs – where to start?

Once you have completed your ITT, the key is to find the perfect school to support you through your NQT induction and kick off your teaching career.

There are a few tips and hints CE would suggest you keep in mind during your job search:

  • Begin your job search nice and early, you’ll be surprised how quickly July comes around
  • Make sure you prepare your CV and supporting statement / cover letter
  • Try not to listen to other people’s horror stories or opinions; make your own decisions
  • Do NOT underestimate the need for thorough preparation ahead of interview
  • You do not have to accept your first job offer. Find the right school for you

We have vacancies across:

  • Early Years (Nursery & Reception)
  • Key Stage 1 (years 1 & 2)
  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4 & 5)
  • Secondary Subject NQT (KS3, 4 & 5)
Jobs Like These

Primary NQTs:

As a Primary NQT, you should have an idea of which year or key stage you would like to teach. Teaching is often a long career and could see you teach across all 3 phase groups. Your first permanent post as an NQT should be within your comfort zone, a year group you have experience and confidence within.

Once you are set on which phase and year group you are looking for, try to gain a clear picture of what your ideal school would be. With over 2000 state primary schools within Greater London, your choice could be overwhelming. Aim to be as open minded as possible, without losing sight of what kind of environment would suit your personality and skillset. Faith or state, creative or traditional, 1, 2 or 3 form entry…you will know when you have found the right school.

Secondary NQTs:

Secondary teachers are subject specialists, so as an NQT, ensuring your subject knowledge is strong and in-depth is key to your development throughout your teacher training, as well as securing your first permanent post. NQTs should feel at ease teaching their subject across Key Stage 3 and 4 in most subjects, and confident in dealing with the daily inner city challenges such as challenging behaviour.

Each and every school will be a different experience for an NQT, with so many factors contributing to your experience. Your journey to the school, lesson observation, and meeting your potential line manager and Head of Department can all have a varying effect on your decision.

When preparing for your first, and possibly your only interview: be thorough. Do the basics right, and have confidence in your ability. Schools are looking for an NQT with real potential; those who show promise and can add value to their team.

  • 5 star review  I'm so impressed with Clarus Education and very glad to be represented by them - I recently found the agency through a job advert and decided to give them a call to see if it would be possible for me to work as a teaching assistant for them despite having limited experience in this area. From the very first phone call I found the team to be enthusiastic, kind, helpful and professional. When I met Ali, Shevonnae and Ryan I was really impressed with how they took their time to get to know me and my ambitions and expectations as well as having a relaxed and friendly approach. As soon as all necessary paperwork and checks were done I couldn't believe how quickly Ali arranged a trial at a school for me (within one day!) and at the end of the day I was offered the job. I'm really impressed with Ali's work and dedication in securing me this role and would definitely recommend Clarus to anyone seeking work in education because they have been fantastic to deal with and have turned what can be a stressful and anxious time into a really positive experience for me.

  • 5 star review  Thank you so much to both Ali and George for helping me secure my TA position! From the beginning they were both very clear and patient with me as I told them what I was looking. Although George took over halfway the handover was seamless and worked incredibly well. They were both very encouraging about my competence for the position and I received very clear and details advice about the interview process. I always felt incredibly comfortable talking on the phone to both - two very friendly, funny and hard working individuals! I am looking forward to starting my position in September and will definitely be recommending Clarus to anyone wanting to go into education :)

  • 5 star review  I’ve always been a bit skeptical about agencies, but joining Clarus educations was the best choice I have made in a long time. I have been out of a school setting for a year working in the corporate world instead, but as soon as I started applying for jobs I got an email from George at Clarus Education, within a week of that email I had met George and had an interview at a school close to my house. George was absolutely amazing, he responded to all my emails quickly (in under 30 minutes) and was always on hand to help. If you do go to Clarus Education I would definitely ask for George, he made the whole process calm and fun and he is very easy to talk to about it all. Charly

  • 5 star review  I'm very pleased to be represented by Clarus Education and grateful to have had Nikki, who managed to secure me a TA role within 2 weeks. I had returned to the UK (having worked overseas as an ESL/EFL teacher for the past 6 months), with the intention of gaining experience within a UK school prior to starting my PGCE training in September. I submitted my CV in early January, and received a phone call the next day. I was invited for an initial interview, where I met Nikki and the rest of the team. Shevonnae was brilliant in helping me get all my documents in so everything was processed quickly. I would just like to say a big thank you to Nikki, for all her hard work and effort, who kept in frequent contact with me throughout the process. And thank you to the rest of the team at Clarus. Highly recommended!!
